The Art and Culture course will focus upon the influential role of the visual arts in civilization. It examines works of art as illustrations of changing aesthetic and cultural viewpoints as ideological developments in society from ancient to modern times. This class is intended for all students of all artistic abilities. This course is approved as a UC/CSU college preparatory Fine Arts elective.

Drawing and Design (P)

This course introduces students to the elements and principles of art. There are units on drawing, two and three-dimensional design, the use of color, and water color painting. Students will create and build a portfolio which they could use for art college admissions. This course is approved as a UC/CSU college preparatory Fine Arts elective.

Advanced Painting (P)

Advanced painting will expose students to the various techniques of painting as well as explore the creative aspects involved in the painting process. Diverse approaches will be investigated through specific studio art assignments in oil and water-based media on various painting supports. During the second semester, students will design and paint large scale murals. Students will develop the ability to think critically about their own work and the work of other artists through class discussion and critiques. This class is intended for serious art students who may be considering a college major in the fine arts. This course is approved as a UC/CSU college preparatory Fine Arts elective.

Introduction to Drama (P)

This course is designed to improve students’ self confidence, communication, and performance skills through the study of acting and theater. This is a performance-based course which will include the study of acting through pantomime, improvisation, play study and performance, movement, and vocal technique. Students will participate in the reading, writing, and viewing of contemporary drama, as well as learn the fundamentals of technical theater and play production. This elective will benefit those students who enjoy thinking creatively, working with others, and are interested in the performing arts. This course is approved as a UC/CSU college preparatory Fine Arts elective.

Introduction to Dance (P)

Students will have the opportunity to learn yoga, hip hop, West African dance and contemporary modern dance styles, while having the chance to gain awareness of the body in a safe and structured class environment. Through the study of these techniques in their historical, cultural and kinesthetic contexts, students will gain a fundamental understanding of choreography and improvisational movement from diverse backgrounds. Students will have the opportunity to participate in both the choreography and performance of the school’s two major stage productions. Students will also watch dance films as well as live performances outside of class and respond critically in written form. Course instruction will also emphasize injury prevention, health and nutrition for the emerging dancer, as these as critical for a healthy body and approach to dance. This course will be submitted as a UC/CSU college preparatory Visual Fine Arts elective. It will also fulfill the second year of our Physical education requirement.
