Tony Lema Golf Tournament

The next S.E.H. Tony Lema Golf Tournament will be held in September 2012 at the Lake Chabot Golf Course in Oakland. The exact date will be announced next summer.

This alumni event is a unique opportunity for parents, alumni, the business community, and friends to support scholarship funds for families unable to meet the full cost of tuition at Saint Elizabeth High School.  Your partnership helps the school and its diverse student population.  For many years now, Saint Elizabeth High School has had over 99% graduation rate, and in the past five years 98% is accepted into college.

There are other ways to get involved:

Sponsorship:  Your family or business could help underwrite costs of the 2012 Tony Lema Golf Tournament and support for the scholarship fund.  We are looking for tournament sponsors and other levels of sponsorships.  Sponsorships will be due in August 2012 to allow time for signage on merchandise orders.

Prize Donations:  We always appreciate donations for our raffle and goody bags.  Players especially like a game of golf and golf accessories.  Wines, get-aways, tickets to sporting events, and dinner certificates are popular items.  Gift certificates for your products or services, which is a good way to promote your business, are also appreciated.

Event Volunteers:  Volunteers are needed on the day of the event.  It's a fun way to support SEH.  We have morning and afternoon shifts available on tournament day at Lake Chabot Golf Course in Oakland.

Further details will be announced as they are finalized.

Champagne for everyone!
Anthony David "Tony" Lema
(February 25, 1934 - July 24, 1966)

TONY LEMA was an alumnus of Saint Elizabeth High School Class of 1952, winner of the British Open in 1964 and many other major championships (see list below).

There are a few "rags to riches" golf stories that can match that of "Champagne" Tony.  Tony Lema learned the game of golf as a caddy and player on the links of Oakland's Lake Chabot Municipal Golf Course.  He learned the game of life on the streets of east Oakland, growing up on 92nd and 105th Avenues "on the other side of the tracks," as Tony once described his home on 92nd Avenue next to the train tracks that ran along what is now Bancroft Avenue.  Lema attended E. Morris Cox Elementary and St. Bernard Catholic schools as a young child.  (Printed with permission from Paul Brekke-Miesner, www.38thnotes.com)

The Saint Elizabeth High School Alumni Association started the golf tournament in 2009 to raise funds for student scholarships, and named it in honor of Tony Lema '52.
